Dallas Cowboys Playoff Picture -- Home Field Wrapped Up
The Dallas Cowboys are on a roll. Not only did they beat the Carolina Panthers on the road Saturday, but on Sunday the Chicago Bears absolutely demolished the Green Bay Packers, meaning the Cowboys have secured home field advantage for the playoffs. The Cowboys have played well on the road this year, but it's always nice to not have to travel to Green Bay in January!
Saturday's game saw a resurgence of the Dallas running game. The Cowboys churned out 148 yards on the ground against a decent Carolina defense, led by Marion Barber's 110 yards on 22 carries. Marion scored a touchdown on the ground as well.
Tony Romo was fairly efficient, connecting on 28 of his 42 pass attempts for 257 yards and a touchdown. Romo hit 8 different receivers, but no one receiver had more than 65 yards receiving. Four receivers had more than 48 yards receiving though. Terrell Owens had the lone receiving touchdown, but suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss the last game of the regular season against the Washington Redskins. Owens hopes to return for the Cowboys first playoff game, but even that is in question and will probably come down to a game day decision.
Tony surpassed Danny White's team record for passing yards (3,980 yards) set in 1983, and now has 4,125 passing yards on the season. Romo's 28 completions leave him just six shy of Danny White's team record of 334 completions, also set in 1983. Another of White's team records, 29 TD passes in 1983, was broken by Mr. Romo in late November! Tony's passer rating of 99.3 is currently the third best rating in Cowboys history, and basically caps what has become of the greatest seasons a Dallas QB has produced, and you can make a pretty good argument that it is the best in team history.
Due to a variety of factors, the Redskins are favored by a touchdown over the Cowboys this week, even though Dallas has the best record in the NFC. The Redskins have something to play for and the Cowboys don't. Washington would lock up a playoff spot with a win over Dallas, and probably will not make the playoffs if they lose to Dallas. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips has stated that he wants to win this game, but is he really going to risk an injury to a key starter with essentially nothing to gain? The general feeling around Dallas is that no starter will play more than the first half, and may not even finish the first quarter.
The Carolina game, coupled with the Green Bay loss puts a nice finishing touch to the best regular season in Dallas in at least a decade. Only a meaningless regular season finale and a first round bye in the playoffs stand in the way of the really important games. Will TO be able to play? Will Tony Romo be able to forget about the field goal snafu that cost the Cowboys a win in the first round of the playoffs last year? Stay tuned. It's about to get interesting.
